4 Important Reasons For You To Take a Day of Rest

Here are 4 very important reasons that we should take at least one day of rest.

We are Made of Dust

If you drove your car non-stop, 24/7, 7 days a week without maintenance, your engine would not only wear out faster but it’d have a breakdown.  In the same way, the human body is not designed to run continuously without a rest and could undergo serious damage.  David wrote that God “knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14).  I like to say that 7 days without rest makes one weak and that’s so true. That’s why God gave us a day of rest every week.

A Mental Break

I have regular maintenance on my computer hard drive.  I have to defragment it once in a while because if it gets too fragmented, errors start showing up.  Our minds are a lot like a hard drive on a computer.  If it doesn’t get “de-fragged” then bugs or errors start showing up.  Our brain is an amazing thing but even our minds need to be renewed and refreshed once in a while and it needs time to “unplug.”

Rejuvenate and Refresh

Sometimes I just need to recharge my spirit.  The human spirit gets weary from all of the toil and grind of the daily business of living. I have a family, I have appointments, I have counseling, I have a job, I pastor a church, and I have…, well just fill in the blank.

A Time for Family

There is a time to work and a time not to work. If a person doesn’t get some proper rest from all of the mental gymnastics of life and from the hustle and bustle then they don’t allow themselves anytime for fun.  Solomon said that there should be a time to laugh and a time to dance (Eccl 3:4).  If you feel you don’t have the time then you must make the time.  Take the time to spend with your family just laughing, have a board game night, take in a family-friendly movie, or anything that your family loves to do.  I plead guilty to putting my family last in my life way too often even though I know that a man’s family is really his first and foremost earthly ministry.

May God richly bless you,
