What are five things you can do to discover God’s will for your life?

Obey the Revealed Will of God

Don’t think that God will reveal His will for your life if you are not obeying the revealed will of God that is found in the Bible. The revealed will is easy to find. We know that “this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality” (1 Thess. 4:3), and we are to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess. 5:18). This means that you must “be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Rom. 12:2).

Seek to Glorify God

God says, “… in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me” (Psalm 50:15). Since we were bought with the precious blood of Christ, we should “so glorify God in your body” (1 Cor. 6:20) because God says, “I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other” (Isaiah 42:8) and “I will not yield my glory to another” (Isaiah 48:11). If we seek to glorify God, then we have already found His will, for that is what He seeks for us to do.

Seek Godly Counsel

If you want to know the will of God for your life, obey what you know in the Bible. Seek to glorify God, but also seek godly counsel. Godly people may already know from experience how to help you find God’s will for your life. They might have some useful experiences in their life that can help you to know how they found God’s will and how to discern whether something is or is not the will of God. There truly is safety in a multitude of counselors (Prov. 11:14).

Pray

This sounds too simple to work, but it does. Pray for God to reveal His will for your life, and I believe He will. Why wouldn’t God answer an earnest and honest prayer request like this? God isn’t trying to play hide and seek with His will for your life. He wants you to know what it is, and sometimes God will make it plain to us, but we must seek Him in prayer.

Ask for Wisdom

God wants to make us wise, but the trouble is we don’t ask God for wisdom, even though He says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5). Take God at His Word. He promises to give us wisdom if we ask.

Conclusion

Paul tells us all to “… not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” (Eph. 5:17). Anyone who does the will of God the Father is in the family of God (Mark 3:35). Therefore, I suggest that you obey God’s revealed will, which is found in His Word; seek to glorify God, for that is clearly His will; seek godly counsel to help you find God’s will for your life; pray to God for His will to be made known to you; and ask God for wisdom in discerning His will. If you do these things, I am confident you’ll find God’s will for your life, and that is an exceedingly good thing to find.
