What are three of the most important things that we believe Jesus said but actually never did?

God Helps those who Help Themselves

No, this is not found in the Bible. It sounds nice and some people have falsely attributed it to Jesus but actually Jesus would more likely say “God helps those who cannot help themselves” because He wants us to rely on Him every day of our life.  This phrase has been falsely attributed to Jesus or being in the Bible but nothing could be further from the doctrines of relying on God for all things (Matt 6:33, Psalm 37, etc.).

Neither do I Condemn You

When the woman was caught in the act of adultery, the religious leaders brought her to Jesus to be stoned.  If Jesus didn’t agree to have her stoned, then they could accuse Jesus of breaking the Mosaic Law but if He did agree to stoning her, then they could go to the Roman authorities and say that Jesus is teaching something contrary to the Roman law of rule.  That is, the Jews had no permission to execute anyone.  So after her accusers left one by one and since none of them were without sin, He said, “Neither do I condemn you…now, go and sin no more” (John 8:11).  Jesus didn’t say she wasn’t guilty of sin but neither did He say “neither do I condemn you” and stop there.  This saying is part of a sentence and so it’s not the end of a thought.  He told her, “Neither do I condemn you, now go and sin no more.” You can’t say “Neither do I condemn you” without saying she needs to stop this sin of adultery and why He insinuated that this woman needed to repent and stop sinning.

Everyone has to bear their own cross

Again this is wrong. What Jesus actually said in Matthew 16:24-25 “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”  To take up His cross is not the same thing as bearing a cross because Jesus bore our sins on the cross.  He never said that we will have our own cross to bear but to take up His cross.
