If you know me at all you know that I am a big sports fan. When I was growing up (in my teenage years), I loved watching every sport that I could find. Baseball, basketball, football, golf, hockey, and even other less popular sports like tennis. As I have gotten older I very rarely watch any sport other than football. Football is a sport that I enjoy even if my favorite team (Philadelphia Eagles) is not being shown as I can watch almost any team and enjoy it. As I have gotten older maybe I have become more cynical towards the other sports but I still love football. But what is happening to football?
The last month or so has been story after story about players, owners and even the commissioner in very troubling stories. There have been horrific videos of a woman being knocked out in an elevator. There are pictures of a 4-year-old boy with welts, bruises and cuts on his legs. There have been accusations of cover-up stories involving the commissioner and a team owner. There has been an ongoing onslaught of players testing positive for performance enhancing drugs and recreational drugs too. It seems to go on and on and on.
The beginning of most football telecasts start with the most recent scandal of the day in the football league. It is almost overwhelming. I still love watching football but this constant negative cycle of news about the NFL just reminds me of how lost our world really is. The NFL is probably just a microcosm of how lost our world truly is. I have been talking about sports but if we turned on any news broadcast, it would be even worse as the local and national news often is very depressing to watch.
Friends, we live in a lost society with people who often have no hope. There is hurt and sadness all around and it is a reminder of what we read in God’s word. Isaiah 53:6 says, “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Ecclesiastes 7:20 says, “there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins.” Romans 3:10 says it in a similar way, “None is righteous, no not one.”
When I think of these verses in light of the ongoing stories in the NFL it reminds me of how lost and without hope we all are apart from Jesus Christ. We are all confronted with our own depravity and sin every day. We can thank God that He has conquered sin and death. He has paid for our sins with His shed blood on the cross. This world will never be “good” no matter what happens politically or otherwise because we live in a lost world.
The next time you watch a depressing newscast or maybe watch a football game in which they are talking about non-football stuff just remember how great a God we have. A God that knew how we would shake our fist in rebellion against Him and sin every day of our lives but yet He still choose to send His Son to be nailed on a cross for you and me.
