Here are 5 things you should know about human trafficking in order to try and eliminate one of the most evil things going on in the world today. Can you suggest another?
Human Slavery is no Myth
According to World Vision there are at least 800,000 victims of human trafficking and most of them come from or pass through the Southeast Asia nations through the porous borders that make up the Greater Mekong Sub-region area, which has one of the largest concentrations of human trafficking.
Young Girls, Boys, and Women
The vast majority of human trafficking victims are girls from ages 7 to 17 and some as young as 5 years old! Many more above that age are also sold into slavery by their parents for financial reasons but what happens to these children, mostly girls? They are sexually abused and sometimes tortured and some are even gang raped. It’s as bad as your mind can imagine. Tiny Hands International is a ministry that works in an effort in trying to end this despicable human evil.
Boys and Men are Victims
In the evil state of the world, young boys are sold at a premium to mostly men so men and young boys are not immune from the atrocities of human trafficking. Many myths are being shattered today by young boys and men who have escaped their sexual slavery have told their morbid stories. Most of them are younger boys, teens and even young adults, under the age of 30.
Victims Taken into Industries
The victims of human trafficking are often sold into industries and not just brothels or for private use. They are enslaved to work in physically violent environments that are set in hazardous working conditions to do jobs that no one else is willing to do. In one Thai border town of Mae Sot, over 77% of the factory workers (who worked in highly dangerous conditions) were girls, some of which worked 12 hour days, 7 days a week.
More Slaves Today than Ever Before
If you think that there are not as many slaves today as there used to be, you’d be wrong because there are 29 million people (conservative figure) living in slavery today around the world. Slavery Footprint estimates there are 15,000 being trafficked every single year in the United States with the majority being enslaved by major retailers.
Conclusion
There are things you can do to combat this evil where you live. To find out more, contact slaveryfootprint.org or tinyhandsinternation.org and let’s try to work together to put an end to one of the most wicked of human institutions…human trafficking.
