5 Essential Prayers For Your Husband

A Holy Vocation

Martin Luther believed in the priesthood of the believer. In other words, everyone’s work is a holy vocation or special calling by God. This is very similar to what the Apostle Paul reminded the Colossians about, so that it wouldn’t be “by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (Col 3:22b-24). Your 401-k can’t compare to an eternal inheritance. One passes away…one remains forever. Pray that your husband might do whatever it is he does, with all his might (Eccl 9:10), because ultimately, he works for God and not an employer.

Deliverance from the Evil One

When Jesus’ disciples ask Him how to pray, He included the need to pray for deliverance from the Evil One. In the Greek, this is a personal pronoun, so Jesus means someone specific, and that is clearly Satan. Pray that God will deliver your husband from the powerful influence of Satan today because He is one of our worst three enemies and those would be the world, the flesh, and the Devil. Pray for God’s strength in his resisting the powers of darkness (demons).

Resist the Devil

James, Jesus’ half-brother, was not saved until after the resurrection. He didn’t realize at the time that he was like all who have not yet trusted in Christ; the walking dead (Eph 2:1-2). James and all of us needed a resurrection and a new birth (John 3:4-7) in order to resist the Devil, but your husband will need to submit to God so pray for that. James wrote, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). If there is no submission to God, then there will be no resistance to the enemy and there’ll be no fleeing the scene. Pray your husband runs from any sexually immoral suggestions or images, because there are very grave consequences for this sin (1 Cor 6:18).

To Abide in the Word

When your husband begins the day, pray he seeks the True Vine, which is Jesus Christ, because if he abides in that Word, that Word will abide in him throughout the day. This gives your husband the ability to hide God’s Word in his heart so that he might not sin (Psalm 119:11). Without Christ, we can’t do anything at all for God (John 15:5). Pray for your husband to have a hunger and thirst for righteousness and that righteousness is found in the Word of God, but also, as his wife, you will do the very same thing; perhaps even together before you start the day.

In Spirit and in Truth

God is seeking those to worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24), so pray that your husband might seek truthful teachings from the Word of God and solid biblical teachers so that he can discern truth from error. Also pray that he might glorify God at work and that he would always speak the truth, and have a right relationship with people at work, and by doing what is right in God’s eyes, not mans. God desires to be glorified and we can glorify God in our lives. When others see your husband, pray they see the light of Christ living in him. Pray that this draws others to him in order that he might tell them of the one and only way to be saved (Acts 4:12). If your husband seeks to glorify God and does that, then that man of yours will truly be blessed. Pray for that.

Conclusion

Both of the spouses need to be praying for one another, and just as I previously wrote a devotional for essential prayers that husbands should be praying for their wives, so this one shows the essential need for wives to pray for their husbands. A couple that prays together increases their chances of staying together, and naturally that includes the husband’s need to pray for his wife and the wife’s need to pray for her husband. Today it may be more important than ever before.
