5 Household Chores With Spiritual Benefit

Here are five household chores that you probably never thought had spiritual benefits.

Yard Work

Why not pray while you work? God doesn’t limit our access to Him by what we’re doing. He is always there. The prayer room is anywhere you go. It’s a great use of your time to pray while you mow the lawn or do your weed eating or whatever else you have to do outside. Think about keeping the Garden as Adam was commanded to do. We are tending God’s very own creation so ponder that the next time you have to work outside.

Home Work

When I’m out working, it seems our cats like to follow me. Perhaps they think they’re dogs instead of cats, but I’m not telling them. When I work on the house, I think of the great blessing that we have. Millions have no place to lay their head and they have no roof over them and four walls around them to keep the heat out in the summer and the cold out in the winter. What a great blessing many of us have and we don’t even realize it. I hope that the next time you work on the outside of the house (painting, caulking, etc.), just express thanks to God that you even have a house.

House Work

To see the spiritual benefit of anything, you have to be looking for it and again, we should thank God that we even have a house…many don’t. We should remember Job’s words, “The LORD gave me what I had, and the LORD has taken it away. Praise the name of the LORD” (Job 1:21). Sadly, most of us don’t realize how much we’ve been blessed until we lose something….or someone! Being thankful to God is being content in Him. That tells Him you’re satisfied and it’s true that contentment with godliness is great gain (1st Tim 6:6).

Laundry Work

When I was single, I used to do laundry and when I did the whites, I was reminded of a Bible verse where it says that the bride of Christ is ready for her marriage to the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ (Rev 19:7), but first the bride of Christ, the church, needed a new wardrobe, so “it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure” (Rev 19:8) and Isaiah the Prophet wrote, “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool” (Isaiah 1:18).Laundry Work

Working for the Lord

When you’re working at home, whatever it is, remember that you are really working for God. Not just at an employer, but whatever you put your hand to, do it all your might (Eccl 9:10). This was good counsel from Solomon then and it’s still good counsel today. Think of it as God watching you and seeing if you enjoy it and if you’re giving it all you’ve got. Work for Him, or as the Apostle Paul wrote, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (Col 3:23-24).

Conclusion

We can receive spiritual benefits from almost anything we do (except sin) so why not try to use the time working to pray to God, to be thankful to God, to not take for granted what God’s blessed us with, to work for God, and to reflect on the very righteousness of God being attributed to us. There are many spiritual benefits that you never thought were there!
