Here are five interesting scientific facts found in the Bible.
Joy and Health
Scientists have long said that our attitude determines our health. Whoever lives with a joyful heart has a healthier heart. That’s a scientific fact, just as the proverbs says, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Prov 17:22). A crushed spirit literally hurts the physical body but a joyful heart is better than any medicine in the world, because the “joy of the Lord” is their strength (Ne 8:10).
Creation
Scientists say that there are five categories that everything consists of, like time, energy, matter, space, motion, and we see this in the very beginning of the Bible as it says, “In the beginning, [that’s time] God created [that’s energy] the heavens [that’s space] and the earth [that‘s matter]” (Gen 1:1). We could add motion to this as well where it says “the heavens and the earth” because these were all set in motion by the effectual power of God’s spoken word. It is written that God spoke and the worlds existed which is what Psalm 33:9 says, “For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.”
The Expanding Universe
We know that the universe at one time was reduced to one single point in space and time and that all matter appears to have come from that one point as Isaiah wrote, “It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in” (Isaiah 40:22). Job is the oldest book in the Bible and he wrote that “He alone stretches out the heavens” (Job 9:8a). It is still being stretched out today or still expanding further and further because God “stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in” (Isaiah 40:22).
The Hydrological Cycle
For most of the history of humanity, few understood what the hydrological cycle was, but this was written thousands of years before mankind finally understood this. Amos the prophet wrote that God, “builds his upper chambers in the heavens and founds his vault upon the earth; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth” (Amos 9:6), and Job was even clearer about the hydrological cycle, writing “For he draws up the drops of water; they distill his mist in rain, which the skies pour down and drop on mankind abundantly” (Job 36:27-28). Science has testified to this fact…but it only came through discovery thousands of years later, centuries after the Bible had already stated this as fact.
The Earth in Space
For thousands of years, mankind believed that the earth was flat (which the Bible says it’s not, i.e. Isaiah 40:22; Luke 17:34-36) and that it was held up by some by elephant, or Hercules, or even Atlas, but as Job 26:7 says, “He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing.” Of course we can see that now as we can look at the earth from space, but the Bible had these things right thousands of years ago.
Conclusion
The Bible is not a science book nor is it a book about the heavens, but it’s a book about how to get to heaven. We can’t read the Bible like we can human books because it’s not authored by humans, but in fact “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2nd Tim 3:16).
