Is America Still One Nation Under God?

Is America still “one nation under God” or have things changed?

The Pledge of Allegiance

The Pledge of Allegiance is not as much a pledge of allegiance to the nation as it is to the U.S. flag. The Pledge of Allegiance was adopted in 1945 but the words “under God” were not added until 1954. Congressional sessions begin with the Pledge of Allegiance, as do many public school days, but now there is a tendency to take out or omit the word “under God” when saying it or not even recite the Pledge of Allegiance at all. At the most recent Democratic National Convention, they omitted the words “under God” in the pledged, and by doing so, they were making a statement, either intentionally or not, that we may not be a nation under God any more, or at least they don’t think its’s proper to use the name “God” because it might offend someone. How sad that we’ve not pledged allegiance to God anymore but pledged allegiance to political correctness.

Are we Under God?

If we pledge an allegiance that we are “under God,” does this mean we are under His authority? I believe that’s what the “under” means in being “under God.” Where the pledge states that we are “one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” can this be said to still be true today? Honestly, it doesn’t look like it. For one thing, if our nation is truly “under God” why have we mercilessly slaughtered over 63 million babies since Roe v Wade in 1973? Does a nation “under God” murder innocent victims? Logic would tell us “no!” I sense that we are becoming ever more secular, day by day. When we can’t even pray in school because we don’t want to offend someone of another faith or those who don’t believe, we are no longer under God but under the god of political correctness.

In God we Trust?

We have now kicked God out of school, out of the market place, out of the public square, and out of nearly any place we live today, and when tragedy strikes, people ask, “Where was God?” My answer is, “Don’t you remember, you kicked Him out?” You can’t say, “Where was God” while not wanting to have anything to do with Him in your life? Others say, “Where was God in the last school shooting” to which I say, “He was in the same place He’s always been…on the throne of heaven…and in the same place where He saw His innocent Son, Jesus Christ, illegally tried, convicted, and murdered for our sake. Do we really trust God or do we trust our nation more? The watering down of the gospel and the silence of many Christians has eroded the trust in God in this nation. Why say you believe in God as a nation, and yet follow ungodly principles and legalize murder (abortion)?

Prayer in School

Most Christians are not happy that most public schools have now banned prayer, but I would say that fighting to have prayer in school is not as important as first making sure there’s prayer at home. This is not the greatest battle for Christians but the greatest battle is to pray to have this nation repent and to return “under God” instead of our own agendas actually being over God. Want to focus on prayer? Then read Nehemiah’s prayer for his nation; “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2nd Chron 7:14), however God warns, “if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will pluck you up from my land that I have given you, and this house that I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples” (2nd Chron 7:19-20). If we as a nation begin to wonder why it seems God has removed His blessing on the nation and we ask, “What happened to God?,” they can see the answer in Scripture; “Because they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore he has brought all this disaster on them” (2nd Chorn 7:22). Today, our gods are our sports teams, jobs, possessions, or whatever else we put before God. It seems today that in our nation we are the center of the universe instead of God being in that rightful place. Everything in this nation seems to rotate around the mighty dollar, so it’s not in God we trust but in the greenbacks that “In God we Trust” is printed on.

Conclusion

Is America still “one nation under God” or have things changed? It doesn’t appear so by looking at how things are going in our nation. They have kicked God out of everything and put their own idols before themselves and worship them instead of the One, True God Who rules the universe. We are not under God in my opinion anymore, however there has always been a faithful remnant that refused to be under the things of the world and instead, have submitted themselves under the mighty hand of God. We might still pledge allegiance to the flag, but is our allegiance with God? That’s the bigger question. How can this nation turn back to God and repent of her sins and again, be “under God?” It will take revival and prayer, humility and submission to God. I say it’s not too late as long as the church continues to pray for this nation and in the hopes that if we “humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2nd Chron 7:14).

May God richly bless you,
