Letter From A Deceased Friend

If this letter doesn’t challenge you today I don’t know what will.

I called you my friend and feel that
you were to blame somehow.
On earth I walked with you day by day
and you never did point me the way.
you knew the lord in truth and glory
but you never did simply tell me the story.
my knowledge then was very dim
and you could have led me safely to him
though we lived together on the earth,
you never once told me there was a second birth.
and now I stand this day condemned,
because you failed to mention him.
you taught me many things, that’s true.
I called you my friend and I trusted you.
but I learned now that it’s all too late
you could have kept me from this fate.
you walked by day, talked by night
and yet you showed me not the light.
you let me live, and love you, and die,
and you knew that I would never live on high.
yes, I called you my friend in life,
entrusted you in joy and strife,
and yet, on coming to this horrible end,
can I now call you my friend?
