Does the Super Blue Blood Moon have any significance to end time events? What does the Bible say about “blood moons?”
The Day of Pentecost
When the Apostle Peter preached on the Day of Pentecost, there was the sound of a rushing, mighty wind, and cloven tongues of fire appeared on those who spoke in different tongues, or as the Greek (γλῶσσα) indicates (“glossa”), “languages.” These men from different parts of the world who spoke different languages began to hear them speak in their own country’s language, and “they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language” (Acts 2:7-8)? The Apostle Peter answered their question and said that this was the day that was “uttered through the prophet Joel: “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” (Acts 2:16-17). He was quoting Joel 2:28), so just after this pouring out of God’s Spirit on all flesh, “The earth quakes before them; the heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining” (Acts 2:18), however, we are not told how long of a gap it will be between the pouring out of God’s Spirit (which occurred on the Day of Pentecost, in the first century church,) and the time when the sun and the moon will be darkened, and the heaven’s shaken, or as Joel writes, “The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood [except it will be] before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes” (Joel 2:31).
Blood Moons
We can’t just take a blood moon by itself as a sign of Jesus’ return because there have been well over a hundred blood moons since the time of Christ, so we must look for those conditions that are associated with the blood moon. Things like earthquakes (which are on the increase), and the heavens trembling (volcanic activity is also up, and hurricanes), so I don’t think Joel was talking about a lunar eclipse that we call a blood moon. He must have seen a few of those in his own day. A blood moon happens when the Earth’s moon is in full eclipse, and even though it has no special astronomical significance, the view in the sky is striking because the moon is no longer whitish in color, but it becomes a red or ruddy-brown…or “blood moon,” but blood moon’s by themselves do not have any significance, next to their beauty, but when there’s a blood moon without having a lunar eclipse, and one that stays for a while, then that might be significant, because it could come from a volcanic eruption or large asteroid striking the earth, or even a nuclear winter. When cataclysmic events such as super volcanoes erupt, the ash can blot out the sun and the moon to the point that the sun looks like it’s had sackcloth placed over it, and the moon takes on the ruddy-brown, or red, and you have a “blood moon,” so that’s when Joel’s prophecy may come strikingly close to being fulfilled, and just as he wrote, that they’ll be “wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes” (Joel 2:30-31).
Failed Prophecies
There are so many failed prophecies about blood moon’s and those who have sold millions of books about it, that I cannot recall them all, and neither will I name names of these false prophets. I believe they do it to sell a lot of books, and now, because of the January 31st, 2018 Super Blue Blood Moon, their sales are on the increase again. What a shame to have these men fleece the flocks over something that means nothing! It seems every time there’s a blood moon, someone starts talking about the prophecy of Joel or the Day of Pentecost, but many scholars today believe that this was fulfilled in Jerusalem in the first century. For example, the Spirit was poured out on those in Jerusalem while listening to the Apostle Peter’s Day of Pentecost sermon, and they began speaking in different languages than their own. But what didn’t happen was “in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the LORD has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the LORD calls” (Joel 2:32). Remember Jesus’ warning about those who were in Judea that would have to flee to the mountains, and “when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak” (Matt 24:15-18), and that’s just happened in 70 AD when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem, and many who had been warned and were “among the survivors shall be those whom the LORD calls” (Joel 2:32b). So in that day, Jesus said, “Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be” (Matt 24:20-21). Most of Jerusalem was destroyed that day (70 AD), and it was just as Jesus prophesied, saying “there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down” (Matt 24:2), and as happened, the temple was completely destroyed, not one stone left upon another.
Conclusion
Do we know if this blood moon or Super Blue Blood Moon means anything in Bible prophecy? I couldn’t find it. But I do know this. Jesus didn’t teach us to have perfect understanding about all prophecies. He said, “You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Luke 12:40), so I’m not going to waste time trying to guess when He’ll return. I don’t know when He’ll come again, but I do know that He will come again. Here’s what we know about Jesus’ return, and from Jesus Himself: “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Matt 24:36). In fact, Jesus says, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority” (Acts 1:7), so if it’s not for us to know, and we cannot know the day or hour of His return, let’s just enjoy the blood moons when they come, and “be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matt 24:44).
