Christians are thought to be a square peg trying to fit into a round hole in this world, which is why we’re thought to be “weird.” Here is what I believe is the single biggest reason for that.
We Don’t Run With the World
Peter wrote that they (the lost) think we’re strange because we don’t run with them, writing, “With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you” (1 Pet. 4:4). They’re amazed that we don’t love the “evil things that godless people enjoy–their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols” (1 Pet. 4:3). Instead, we should have compassion on them, pray for them, and witness to them because “they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead” (1 Pet. 4:5).
We Hate Sin
This is in direct opposition to the way of the world. We hate sin. The world runs to it and is swift to seek out any lustful pleasure that they can find. The lost love their sin; the saved are repulsed by sinful activities. The lost love the lust; the saved flee temptation. The lost run with the devil; we resist him, and he flees. They love sin, but we hate it because we love God and seek to do those things that are pleasing to Him (1 John 3:22). I’ve been called a “Jesus freak” and even “Jack the Baptist.” Take no offense; wear it like a badge of honor. Remember that to them, as it used to be with us, the cross is completely foolish (1 Cor. 1:18).
The Single Greatest Reason: We Love Our Enemies
We’ve read a couple of different reasons why many people think that Christians are just plain weird, but here is what I think is the single biggest reason. Most of the world’s religions not only don’t love their enemies, they seek to kill them. But Christians love their enemies, do good to those who hate them, bless them that revile them, and pray for those who despitefully abuse them (Matt. 5:11, 44). Christianity is not really a religion; it’s about a relationship with Christ. For those who hate us and call us their enemies, we pray for them, we bless them, we love them, and we do good to them. We are a big mystery to the lost. They would think that we’d retaliate, but “never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord’” (Rom. 12:19). They just don’t get it. But before I was saved, neither did I!
Conclusion
Maybe you have a better reason why many believe that Christians are weird than the ones I have listed here. If so, leave it in a comment below the article. I’d love to read it, and I’m sure the other readers would, too.
May God richly bless you,
